Manoj Ramesh Sane, 56, who has been accused of killing his alleged live-in partner Saraswati Vaidya, 32, in his 7th-floor flat in Geeta Nagar area of Mira Road and later chopping her body into pieces and dumping them in a nullah, told police that he was helping her with her Class 10 studies as she was a school dropout and wanted to study, a senior police officer told The Indian Express.

“She was planning to appear for Class 10 exams and Sane was teaching her maths. This claim seemed genuine as we found a teaching board on one of the walls of the flat with maths sums scribbled on it,” the officer said.

The officer further said that Sane claimed that Vaidya was very possessive. When he would come home late from work, she would suspect he was being unfaithful to her and this led to frequent fights between them, Sane alleged. He also admitted to having frequent fights with her over personal issues. However, their neighbours said they never heard any screams or arguments from flat 704.

Vaidya always wanted Sane to appreciate her and not criticise her, Sane told the police.

Sane claimed before the police that she died by suicide on June 3 and fearing that he would be booked by the police for her suicide, he decided to kill her. He also claimed that after disposing of all the body pieces, he planned to end his life.

The senior police officer, who visited the spot on Wednesday night, and questioned Sane, confirmed the details of Sane’s interrogation, saying that all these claims were now being verified.

Sane allegedly killed Vaidya, chopped her body, and then boiled the parts in a pressure cooker and roasted them on gas to separate flesh and the bones, the police said. He had allegedly kept the pieces in a bucket, a tub, a pressure cooker and vessels in the kitchen, the police said. He allegedly cut them so small that police could not even count the pieces. The police also found Vaidya’s hair with a veni (a string of flowers in the hair) on it.

“The police have invoked sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) in the FIR,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Bajbale, zone-1, Mira-Bhayander Vasai Virar police, said. The body parts collected from the kitchen area have been seized and sent to Sir JJ Hospital in Mumbai for forensic analysis, Bajbale added.

The police are taking the help of medical experts and trying to ascertain which parts of the body are missing. They have seized tree and tile cutters from the flat.
