Metro fetes commuter who nabbed man taking pics of woman on train

An MMOPL spokesperson said the Metro operator launched the campaign to appreciate the goodwill gestures of commuters.

A man was allegedly caught taking photographs of a fellow woman commuter on his mobile phone camera inside a Metro train on Saturday. This is one of the first  cases reported on the recently-launched Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro, equipped with real-time CCTV surveillance, in which a woman commuter’s safety was threatened.

Amit Vengurlekar (26), a resident of Ghatkopar, noticed the person allegedly stealthily clicking photos of the woman, and reported it to the security personnel of the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC) at the Ghatkopar Metro station. The MSSC personnel penalised the offender. The incident took place around 6.45 pm on Saturday.

“I boarded a Ghatkopar-bound train that was fairly empty at the DN Nagar Metro station. Soon I noticed the accused, who held his mobile phone low on his lap, taking photographs of a young woman. She was busy chatting on her phone and didn’t notice,” said Vengurlekar.

After the woman deboarded at the Chakala Metro station, Vengurlekar approached the man and demanded to see his mobile phone. “He resisted and hastily started deleting the photos. I forced him to accompany me and handed him over to the security guards at the Ghatkopar Metro station. I travel by the Metro everyday, but I have never seen women being harassed,” said Vengurlekar, who works with a media company in Andheri.

Later that evening, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), which operates the 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro, called Vengurlekar to laud him for his initiative. The MMOPL staff also presented him a memento with ‘meMetro’ inscribed on it, kicking off a campaign dubbed ‘Metro Hero’ that aims to recognise commuters who aid in promoting discipline and safety on the Metro.

An MMOPL spokesperson said the Metro operator launched the campaign to appreciate the goodwill gestures of commuters like Vengurlekar in improving safety, security, service efficiency and discipline in the transport system.
