The police on Saturday arrested a 48-year-old man for allegedly bludgeoning his own son to death over a dispute in their Dharavi residence. The accused had fled the scene after committing the crime, but was apprehended later in the day.
According to the Dharavi police, the incident occurred at around 6:45 am on the 90 Feet Road in Dharavi on Saturday. The police said that the accused, Zahid Ali Ansari (48) used to stay with his son Mohsin (24) opposite the Lokseva Building in Dharavi.
“Zahid and Mohsin had been arguing for a long time over the ownership of the single storey structure where they stayed. On Saturday morning, another argument occurred over the same reason, and in the heat of the argument, Zahid hit Mohsin on the head with an iron rod and fled the scene,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni, Zone 5.
Some neighbours saw Mohsin lying in the house in a pool of blood and rushed him to Sion Hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The Dharavi police then recorded statements from the neighbours, who told the police about the frequent arguments between the father and son, and that they had heard raised voices from their house early in the morning. The police then launched a manhunt for Zahid.
“Zahid was picked up from the Kurla area on Saturday morning and placed under arrest. His overall behaviour suggests that he suffers from some mental illness, and we have subjected him to medical tests, the reports of which are awaited. He has been charged for murder under the Indian Penal Code and further inquiries are underway,” Kulkarni added.
