Ahead of the Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, a specially choreographed flash mob performed in front of the crowded Bandra railway station in Mumbai on Monday morning to raise awareness about menstrual health and hygiene.
The performance, put together by Ujaas, an initiative under Aditya Birla Education Trust, in collaboration with indie rapper and poet Saniya MQ.
The event saw Saniya MQ unveiling her new song, titled ‘Ye Laal Rang – Periods’. With thought-provoking lyrics such as ‘Jaante nahi kyunki kam hai jaankari, 23 million ladkiya har saal school chhod jari”, it highlighted the significantly high number of school dropouts seen among menstruating girls every year. The song and choreography, which included stunts like flips, were performed twice between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm and caught the attention of commuters and passersby.
The performance was centred on this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day theme ‘Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld’, which aims to empower girls to embrace their menstrual health journey with confidence and dignity.
“Menstrual health is a vital issue that affects millions of women, yet it remains shrouded in stigma and misinformation,” noted Saniya MQ, adding that through her educational rap, she hopes to reach out to young people and spark honest conversations about periods.
Emphasising the need for collective efforts to bring about a change, Advaitesha Birla, founder of Ujaas, highlighted the need for men to be included in the dialogue. She is looking forward to promoting the song and raising awareness among the youth through Ujaas.
