It was three seasons ago that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) came up with the idea of having their T20 championship. The idea was floated after the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and soon MCA launched their first T20 championship_the MCA Corporate Trophy where top teams from the corporate sector took part. A season later the idea was changed and the MCA came up with their T20 championship for A and B division club teams which was last played on February,2010 where Payyade Sports Club clinched an easy final.

However, what has been baffling is that since the past two seasons,MCA has not been able to conduct this tournament citing various reasons. One is lack of time. MCA conducted their past two tournaments in the month of March but last season they somehow couldn’t organise one and this season they again failed to find time, after a busy season of Comrade Shield and Times Shield (ongoing).

However,MCA officials have assured tqhat from next season the T20 tournament will be on and it will be better-planned. “We couldn’t found proper dates for the tournament. Last season too,it was the same problem but next season onwards we will conduct it for sure,” a MCA official said.

Many A and B division clubs were furious about MCA’s move of not conducting a T20 tournament in the past two seasons. Many players don’t get a chance to play in IPL or for the Mumbai side.

“We don’t know why it was stopped and we don’t know whether the tournament will be played next season also,” a player cribbed.

When contacted MCA president Ravi Savant,he was unavailable for the comment.

MPL next year?

Meanwhile,if everything goes as per plan than MCA might have their Mumbai Premier League starting from next season. It is learnt that MCA president Ravi Savant is reviving the local tournament and has planned to rejuvenate some tournaments played so far in Mumbai cricket. “MCA has planned their next season and one will see many changes in the tournaments next year,” an official added.

Special camp

The MCA this season has introduced a special camp for Ranji Trophy and the senior team at their MCA-BKC academy which started few days ago. “This is the first time MCA has started this camp. It’s a pre-season camp where we will work on player’s physical strengthening and other skills,” source added.
