Marine Drive robbery: Cops prepare sketch of accused

Police probing if a gang is involved in the crime

Police on Monday prepared the sketch of one of the four accused who allegedly robbed a jeweller of his cellphone and Rs 3.6 lakh in cash at Marine Drive. The police are also probing the involvement of a gang.

On Sunday afternoon,Jayesh Zaveri (53),a jeweller based in Kalbadevi, was going towards Churchgate in his Maruti Swift accompanied with his son and friend. Aslam Sayyed, who was employed by Zaveri, was driving the car.

According to the police, four men driving behind Zaveri in a Hyundai i10,allegedly intercepted his car at the Meghdoot flyover. The accused got out and broke the windows of Zaveri’s car. They then allegedly snatched Zaveri’s cellphone and a bag containing the cash and fled.

“We received information that one Ayub Chikna may be behind the robbery, but he is still in jail. We have complied a list of such offenders who are out on bail,” said inspector Rajendra Patil of the Marine Drive police station. “All four occupants of the Swift described the attackers. We have drawn the sketch of one of them. None of the accused had

covered his face.”

The police have not been able to locate a CCTV nearby, which may have captured the incident.

This is the second armed robbery in a year on the flyover that connects Dhobi Talao to Marine Drive. On October 23,2012,four men on two motorcycles forced two employees of a bullion firm to stop in the middle of the flyover at gunpoint and fled with the Rs 45 lakh that the victims were transporting to a bank. The four accused were arrested.
