Marine Drive phone snatching: A month later,police yet to nab accused

The accused allegedly slashed her forearm when she resisted their effort.

Nearly a month after two unidentified men allegedly attempted to snatch a cell phone from a woman walking on Marine Drive and attacked her with a knife,the police detained and discharged three suspects. Two other men,who were detained on October 1,were found to have been involved in separate cases of stealing and sent in judicial custody,the police said.

Tardeo resident Meherjan Lamberaj (32) was reportedly attacked by two men on September 13,while she was walking on the promenade.

of one of the accused,the police had prepared a sketch.

“We sent the sketch to all the police stations. All our detection officers were also working on this case. We are focusing our search on known drug addicts and chain snatchers,” said Inspector Rajendra Patil of the Marine Drive police station.

A week ago,Mohammad Shoaib Mansuri was arrested by the J J Marg police station and subsequently transferred to the custody of Marine Drive station. Lamberaj,who was asked to identify him,replied in the negative.

On October 1,the police picked up Prakash Devlekar (22) from Colaba and Prakash Naidu (28) from Girgaum.

“Both are not involved in the attack,but their arrest helped us open up two other cases of chain snatching near Churchgate railway station and at Mafatlal Club,respectively. Both are now in judicial custody,” he said.

On Sunday,two other suspects,Niyamatullah Mirza (20) and Abdul Hafeez Khan (22) were picked up near Metro cinema,the police said. Lamberaj said they weren’t the attackers.
