The contractor booked for the death of three men who suffocated to death in a manhole in Dombivali on Friday was arrested late on Saturday night, police said. The accused was arrested from near his house in Dombivali, police said.
Lakshman Chavan (36) had been booked for causing three deaths due to negligence. On Saturday, after the labourers engaged by Chavan failed to respond to his calls and didn’t come out, he called his wife and asked her to inform the police. “This was done so that he isn’t traced and get the time to flee,” said a police officer, who did not wish to be named.
According to the police, MIDC had hired the contractor repeatedly for various assignment in the last five years. “He was known to the local officials. However, we are checking if he gave protective gears to his workers,” said a senior officer.
On Friday, three men — Ghanshyam Kori (40), Mahadev Dhonde(36) and Devidas Pachange (40) — were found dead inside a manhole chamber while cleaning the drains in Kalyan’s Tilak Nagar area. “Kori went in and collapsed, the other two who followed to check on him too suffocated to death. Prima facie, the cause of deaths seems to be suffocation,” said a senior officer.
