A 60-year-old man was arrested in Gujarat on Sunday, three years after marrying a woman in the city and fleeing with her ornaments.
In 2005,the victim,Sushma (43),registered herself at a local marriage bureau in Dadar and was soon contacted by the accused – Vipin Karkhanis alias Ketan alias Milind Vaidya. They were married in 2007 and lived in a rented home in Kharaghar,Navi Mumbai.
In March 2009,Karkhanis told Sushma that he had to go to Lucknow for work and left her at her mothers house, promising to return in 15 days. Upon his return,he told her that he wanted to increase the gold content in her ornaments and would assign the job to a jeweller he knew. He took the ornaments, worth Rs 50,000,and could not be contacted since.
When he did not return months later,Sushma filed a complaint in July 2009 at J J Marg police station. However,he remained at large.
A month ago,an informer said Karkahnis was doing odd jobs in Surat. He went to Sangli for a few days in the interim, where he was in the process of registering another marriage and returned to Surat. We arrested him from a lodge there on Sunday, said senior inspector Suryakant Surve of J J Marg police station.
He was then brought to the city and identified by Sushma. He has been remanded in police custody until October 19 and charged under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating and dishonesty) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accused confessed that this was his fifth marriage. Karkhanis has said he hails from Vadodara. Every two months,he would use an alias, marry a woman and flee with her ornaments. He said he sold the jewelry in Kalbadevi. A probe is on, said Surve.
