The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested an alleged hardened criminal and former aide of extradited gangster Abu Salem, who had escaped from Dadar railway station two days ago while being escorted back to Nashik jail from a Mumbai court.
The accused has been identified as Sachin Manohar Khambe (33). According to the police, there are various cases pending against him in several courts in Mumbai, including a murder attempt on actor and producer Rakesh Roshan in 2000.
He is a known gangster who is undergoing life imprisonment in the murder case of Ziauddin Bukhari registered at Parksite police station. In 1999,Khambe committed the brutal murder of Jagdish Dhakkan at Dahisar. He was also involved in a firing on Rakesh Roshan in Santacruz in 2000. Khambe also committed the kidnapping of a businessman in Bangalore in 2000. He was arrested under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) after he made extortion calls to hotelier Krishna Shetty in Vokala and his goons later fired on Shetty. In 2010,Khambe attempted to escape from Nashik Jail by throwing chilli powder in the eyes of policemen guarding him. His associate gangster Mangesh Narkar escaped custody in the melee, following which a case was registered against them at Nashik Road police station, said the officer.
According to the police,on February 27,Khambe was brought to the city to attend a hearing in a case at the Esplanade Court. In the evening,he escaped from the hands of the police escort at Dadar station, under the pretext of going to the bathroom.
The Dadar railway police immediately alerted the Crime Branch regarding the incident. Officers from Unit 6 and 7 of the Crime Branch received information on Wednesday that Khambe was to come near the Hindu Shamshan Bhumi on 90 Feet Road in Ghatkopar (East) to meet his associates. A trap was laid accordingly and Khambe and two others were arrested, said the officer.
