A 27-year-old man was on Wednesday arrested by the Bhandup police on charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal intimidation after he allegedly spent part of the Rs 32 lakh entrusted to him by a friend. The accused,Nitin Nikam, was arrested after Sudheshan Kurup (44) approached the police.
The police said Kurup had known Nikam for several months. Kurup is separated from his wife and lives in Bhandup (West). He supplies raw materials to those who prepare gold jewellery. On Saturday,he took Nikam to one of his clients shops as he had to collect Rs 32 lakh from him. He did not want to go alone as he felt it was not safe. They collected the money, said senior police inspector Shrirang Nadgauda.
Nadgauda said Kurup apparently asked Nikam to keep the money overnight as he felt it would be a safer option.
He said he would come back in the morning and collect it, said Nadgauda. When Kurup went to collect the money on Sunday,he found Nikams house locked.
When Kurup called him,he said he had to urgently go out and would be back soon. Kurup waited for a few days and called Nikam again. Nikam began avoiding his calls. He then approached us. Kurup traced Nikam, but was threatened by the accused, said Nadgauda. Nikam apparently used Rs 10 lakh as he owed someone the amount. A probe is on, said Nadgauda.
