A 32-year-old man was shot dead by an unidentified assailant in the Kandivali area of Mumbai Sunday morning. The victim Manoj Chauhan was a resident of the Laljipada slum, said the police.

According to the police, the shooting occurred at around 7.45 am on the link road in the Laljipada area of Kandivali West and the assailant fled from the scene.

In a CCTV footage, the assailant was seen walking behind Chauhan, who was wearing a t-shirt and shorts, and later taking out a firearm and shooting him from a distance of around five feet.

The bullet hit Chauhan in his head and he fell in a pool of blood. The local people rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said

“Preliminary probe indicates that a firearm was used in the crime. The victims used to work in an imitation jewellery unit. The motive for the crime is unknown,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 11) Ajay Bansal.

The Kandivali police registered a murder case and began a probe. The police are in the process of identifying the eyewitnesses. They are also scanning other CCTV cameras to see if they captured the assailant’s movements.

The police said Chauhan’s wife and kids live in his village and his brother claimed the body after the postmortem.
