A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his 16-year-old niece by pushing her off a moving local train that was travelling between Bhayandar and Naigaon on Monday. Police said the accused is her maternal uncle.

According to investigators, the minor left her home in Mankhurd on November 15 and went to the accused’s residence in Vasai (East). Police said the accused later felt the girl would become a “liability” and allegedly decided to kill her.

“The family began searching for the girl after she left home. On Sunday, her elder maternal uncle, who also lives in Vasai, spotted her and alerted her mother. When the mother arrived to take her back, she found the house locked and both the accused and the victim were unreachable,” said senior inspector Dilip Ghuge of Waliv police station. Based on her statement, Waliv police registered a kidnapping case against the accused, Ghuge added.

During the investigation, police learned the two were travelling by a Churchgate–Virar local train. “Both were standing at the door, and when the train was travelling between Bhayandar and Naigaon, the accused pushed the girl from the back, and she fell on the track and died,” an officer said.

Commuters in the compartment witnessed the incident, caught the accused, and handed him over to Vasai Road police. The girl’s body was sent for postmortem.
