A 42-year-old man allegedly jumped off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai on Thursday, officials said. The police said that a search operation was carried out throughout the day but the man could not be located.
According to officials, a driver, identified as Vinay Kumar Yadav, entered the Bandra-Worli Sea Link from the Worli side around 3.45 am.
“His vehicle was north-bound and he stopped his Innova near pole number 47 after which he jumped into the sea,” said an officer.
Passers-by who saw the incident informed Mumbai police’s control room. The police also sought help from the Coast Guard and the Fire Brigade to trace the person. They said they have identified the driver but they are still verifying the details.
“The vehicle that was found on the sea link has a yellow number plate which means it is registered as a commercial vehicle. Later we learnt that Yadav is a driver by profession and his family was located in Jogeshwari,” said an officer.
The officials enquired with the family but have not been able to identify the reason for his step.
“After conducting the search throughout the day, it was called off in the evening. We will resume our search on Friday,” said an official.
In July, a 57-year-old businessman, Tikam Makhija, had committed suicide by jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea link. His remains were recovered from the sea later.
While in another instance, a Fatehpur-based man had survived after he allegedly tried committing suicide by jumping from Bandra-Worli sea link. He was later found near Chaityabhoomi in Shivaji Park after which he was rushed to Sion Hospital and he survived.
In August 2012, Lalit Sheth, who was the founder of leading travel operator, Shree Raj Travels and Tours Ltd., had ended his life by jumping off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.
“As we are aware of people ending their lives by jumping off the BWSL, we have increased patrolling on the sea link while there are several other staffers deputed on the BWSL who refuse motorists from stopping their vehicle on it,” said an official.
