The Mumbai police arrested a 35-year-old man from Borivali for allegedly stalking and outraging the modesty of a 21-year-old female student from south Mumbai.

According to police, a case was registered in the last week of January after the accused allegedly sent the woman abusive messages on WhatsApp. “The accused, identified as Mandar Khade, befriended the complainant in 2021. They initially chatted over Facebook Messenger, after which they became friends and shared each other’s numbers,” said a police officer.

During the course of their conversation, the woman had allegedly stated that she liked a 24-year-old man, which left Khade dejected.

“In February 2023, he sent her a message on WhatsApp claiming that he had incurred huge losses and was planning to end his life. He would also send her obscene and abusive messages, after which the woman asked him not to contact her and subsequently blocked his numbers and other social media accounts,” an officer said.

As per the complaint, the accused then started stalking and messaging her from another number. “He sent one abusive text message on December 4. But the case was registered only after the woman reported another abusive message on January 26,” an officer said.

The woman then approached VP Road police station and lodged a complaint. During the course of the investigation, the police managed to trace his brother and asked him to cooperate with the investigation.

“The brother came to the police station. When we asked him to contact Khade and remain present at the police station for inquiry, Khade refused to cooperate and challenged us by claiming that he was in Nagpur and that if the police wanted to find him, they could do so on their own,” an officer said.

The investigators then started working on his call data records, after which he was located at his residence in Borivali and subsequently arrested. Police said the accused is suffering from mental illness and is under treatment.

“We arrested the accused on March 3 and he was in our custody. The court later sent him to judicial custody,” an officer added.

The police are trying to determine whether he has harassed any other women in the past.
