A suspect, earlier released by the Borivali police for lack of evidence, was arrested again and booked for theft, after a phone call from the Nagaland government identified the victim as niece of the state’s Governor.
A panicked police began fresh probe in the theft case of Rs 1.70 lakh stolen from the house of Aditi Vitthal Prabhu a few days ago.
According to the police officers Prabhu had approached the police claiming that her diamond earrings and 1,300 US dollars were stolen from her cupboard. Prabhu in her statement said that she suspected the massage therapist who attended her father.
On the complaint of 30-year-old Prabhu, the police had detained Hruday Sharma and questioned him. Since the incident Sharma had not been visiting the senior citizen.
The police officers said that during questioning they did not find anything suspicious in his statement and had to release him since they did not get any evidence against him.
After the police officers had released Sharma they got a call from the office of PB Acharya, who has additional charge of governor of Tripura.
Acharya told the police that Prabhu was his niece and wanted to enquire about the status of the investigations of the theft case. After the call, the Borivali police officers panicked and re-opened the investigations of the case.
API Gharge , from the Borivali police station said that after the call they detained Sharma again. The officers claimed that Sharma confessed to the crime in the second round of interrogation.
He was then arrested by the police on the charge of theft.
The police were able to recover the entire stolen booty from Sharma that he had hid in his house in Kandivali (West). “We arrested Sharma and have presented him before the court,” said Gharge.
