A 44-year-old man was arrested by Dharavi police on Saturday for allegedly raping his 17-year-old daughter several times. On one of the occasions,he allegedly raped her in the presence of her seven-year-old cousin, whose statement, police said, has made the case against the man stronger.

According to the police,Shahida (name changed) claimed that she was first raped by her father,Mohd Sattar Sheikh, six months ago but had kept quiet fearing for her life and fearing being thrown out of the family. However, when the accused raped her again last Tuesday,Shahida decided to act. She went to Dharavi police station along with her mother and lodged a complaint against her father. Sheikh was arrested the same day on charges of rape, criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement.

“The accused is a taxi driver, while Shahida’s mother works as an ‘ayah’. She often goes away for a few days on being hired as a daycare worker. The first time Sheikh had raped the victim was in February when her mother, after a fight with him, went away. That night the accused returned home in an inebriated condition and began disrobing Shahida. When she protested,he brandished a knife. Fearing an assault she did not resist,” said police inspector Sushil Kamble of the Dharavi police station.

“Thereafter,he locked the victim inside the house for a few days to prevent her from informing the neighbours about it. Eventually, when she was able to visit a doctor, who confirmed the rape, she told her neighbours and an aunt about it. But they advised her to refrain from making the matter public as it would defame the family,” Kamble said.

Shahida in her statement claimed she did not reveal anything about the incident to even her mother for six months and continued to live in perpetual fear. “According to Shahida, last Sunday her mother had left for another assignment to Pune and the accused arrived home drunk again. Though Shahida’s seven-year-old cousin was sleeping nearby then,it did not deter the accused from forcing himself on her. On Tuesday,he again raped her. But this time, the girl had resolved to expose him and told her mother about it,after which they approached us,” said police sub-inspector Jaisingh Nikalje, who is investigating the case.

According to senior police officials, the case has become stronger owing to a crucial statement by the seven-year-old boy who is a witness to the incident. The police said the boy had woken up when the victim began to struggle after the accused forced himself on her on Sunday. “We have recorded the boy’s statement,” said senior police inspector Hemant Patil, adding Sheikh has a past criminal record.
