A 52-YEAR-OLD man who allegedly cheated a Vile Parle-based doctor after promising him land under Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) quota, was arrested by Borivali police Sunday from the airport as he was about to board a flight to Delhi. Anees Hussain used his wifes Maharashtrian surname and posed as a member of the urban development advisory committee.
Police said Dr Shonak Thakkar, who runs a dental clinic at Oshiwara, stated in his complaint that in 2010,his father Deviprakash met Hussain through a common friend as he wanted a plot in Vile Parle to start a hospital.
Hussain had given Deviprakash his visiting card with the national emblem and with the name Anees Hussain Arnalkar. The designation in the card was given as member of the government urban development advisory committee. He had showed Deviprakash a vacant plot and had taken Rs 30.44 lakh as a token for the land worth around Rs 2 crore. He had also given Deviprakash a receipt with a government seal on it.
Police said after Deviprakash died last year, his son contacted Hussain to cancel the deal and ask for a refund. Hussain gave Thakkar three cheques in February. When all the three cheques bounced,Thakkar approached Borivali police.
We registered a case against Hussain alias Arnalkar for cheating, forgery and impersonation, said senior inspector Bhagwan Chate. Police have also found that while Hussain owned a flat in Raj Heritage building,Borivali,he kept it locked and stayed on rent at Lata Palace building,in a different locality.
Hussain had been posing as a government officer. He was using his wifes last name to lend an air of credibility to his claims, said Chate.
