A man was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly extorting money from bar-owners in Ghatkopar-Vikhroli posing as an aide of senior NCP leaders deputy CM Ajit Pawar and home minister R R Patil.

Pant Nagar police said Manohar Jariyal (40) of Park Site started visiting bars in Vikhroli around six months ago. He would allegedly tell bar-owners he was close to Pawar and Patil and demand money.

Many bar-owners allegedly paid after Jariyal claimed he could shut their enterprise. But the owner of Monica Bar in Ghatkopar became “suspicious” and alerted police.

“We picked up Jariyal from his residence Wednesday and questioned him. A search of his place yielded several sheets of paper with letterheads of NCP consumer protection wing,” said inspector Jitendra Agarkar.

Jariyal allegedly confessed to cheating bar-owners and was placed under arrest.

“We are calculating the money Jariyal extorted. It is expected to be in lakhs. He conned 50-60 bars. He had fixed a date for some bars to pay every month,” a Pant Nagar police officer said. Agarkar said Jariyal was expelled from the NCP consumer protection wing for similar con jobs. NCP,however, denied he was ever a member.“He is not a member or an office-bearer of NCP. If he has committed crime, police should take strict action against him,” NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said.
