A 37-year-old man was recently arrested for allegedly cheating an Andheri businessman of Rs 15 lakh after promising his niece a seat in a city medical college, police said. An accomplice was also arrested earlier this month.
Police said the complainant,Shivkumar Ramlakhan Sharma, who owns an engineering products business and lives in J B Nagar, approached the accused Abid Yusuf Ansari in September last year for securing an admission seat. Sharma had been told by acquaintances that Ansari could help get his niece a seat in Grant Medical College,Byculla.
She had not fared well in her exams, said sub-inspector Suresh Chorat of Nagpada police station.
He added that Ansaris friend Fahim Shaikh (27),a social worker living in Madanpura, was also present when Ansari met Sharma. Ansari allegedly asked for Rs 15 lakh. Sharma paid around Rs 8 lakh after the meeting and Ansari told him that her name would appear in a list of students on a website. However, his nieces name was not on the list, he said.
Sharma approached Ansari again, who asked for the rest of the amount to be paid before repairing an alleged glitch in the website. When the name still did not appear on the website even after the payment,Ansari told Sharma that he would not be able to secure admission in Grant Medical College but would get it done at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in Sion.
Ansari told Sharma to meet him again. Sharma waited for Ansari but he did not turn up. Ansari also switched off his phone and after making a few inquiries at the medical college,Sharma discovered that he had been cheated. It is only in November that Sharma came to us, Chorat said.On April 24,we learnt Ansari had been seen at Hotel Basera in Madanpura. We went there and arrested him, he said.
Ansari told police Shaikh had acted a mediator in his dealings with Sharma and also transported the cash.
