Malad businessman gets extortion call; man claims member of Lawrence Bishnoi gang

A businessman from Malad (East) has lodged a complaint with Dindoshi police after he received a call from an unknown person, who claimed to be a member of Lawrence Bishnoi gang and demanded Rs 20 lakh from him. The caller said he needed the money to free other gang members from jail.
Mumbai Crime Branch is also conducting a parallel probe in the matter.

The 53-year-old businessman, who has a catering business, told the police that he was at home on Thursday night when he received the call. The caller did not disclose his name but introduced himself as a “member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang”. He demanded Rs 20 lakh, which he said he needed to get other gang members out of jail, the police said.
The accused used an international (US-based) number, which was reported as spam by nearly 600 Truecaller users as fraud and harrassment calls for loans.
On the businessman’s complaint, Dindoshi police registered a case under Section 385 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched an investigation in the matter, said a police officer.

Bishnoi, a prime accused in the singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case, is currently in jail in Bathinda. He was also interrogated by the National Investigation Agency in April in a case related to funding for Khalistani outfits.
