In a major reshuffle in the Mumbai Police, 42 police inspectors have been promoted to the rank of senior police inspectors, while 21 other senior officers have been given the rank of assistant commissioner of police and posted across the city. The order for the changes was reportedly issued on Saturday night.
Some of the significant changes at the police station level are that of the appointment of new senior police inspectors at Sahar and Airport police stations, under whose jurisdiction the domestic and international airports come. Babu Mukhedkar is the new senior police inspector at Sahar, and Srirag Meykar at Airport police station. Gangadhar Sonawane, earlier an inspector with Shahunagar police, has been made in-charge of Shivaji Park police as the senior police inspector.
Dharavi police station, which witnessed several protests from various groups over the past year, now has a new senior police inspector — recently promoted police inspector Suryankant Bange.
The most recent protest on 90-feet road outside the Dharavi police station was over the death of Dalit scholar Rohith Vermula, which took a violent turn after two groups clashed.
Khar and Bandra police stations have also seen a change in guard with Sailesh Pasalwad, who was earlier an inspector with Bandra police, now the senior police inspector of Khar police station. Khar was at the epicentre of the high-profile Sheena Bora murder case, which was later transferred to CBI.
Inspector Pandit Thakre, who was earlier attached with the Juhu police station as the crime in-charge, has been made the senior police inspector of the Bandra police station. Both Pasalwad and Thakre were leading probe teams formed by former police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who was personally investigating the Sheena Bora murder.
Days before the ‘Make in India’ programme at Girgaum Chowpatty is to take off, the Gamdevi police station has a new senior police inspector and assistant police commissioner, both recently promoted. Netaji Bhopde is the new senior inspector and Shirish Sawant the new assistant commissioner.
Sunil Kavelkar, who was in charge of Pydhonie police station, has been promoted to assistant commissioner of police and transferred to the Azad Maidan division. Also, 15 senior police inspectors have been transferred in various unit and branches within the city police department. Arun Satpute has been made the new senior police inspector of MHB Colony after his predecessor Subhash Chavan was caught in an ACB trap accepting a bribe of Rs 3 lakh.
