After compelling banks to use Marathi language, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has now turned its attention to the education sector in its ongoing campaign to promote the use of Marathi across the state.

Chetan Pednekar, a representative of the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena—MNS’s student wing—has written a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to issue directions requiring all educational institutions, including those affiliated with various boards and regardless of their funding status, to prominently display their name boards in Marathi.

Through the letter to the CM, Pednekar has emphasised the importance of consistently enforcing the use of Marathi in all public domains, stating that such measures are essential to uphold the language’s rightful place in Maharashtra.

“All Marathi-speaking citizens take pride in Marathi language, and hence the movement to promote the use of Marathi has gained strong support. The government has already taken several decisions at different levels to ensure Marathi gets the respect it deserves and is used officially. However, to ensure effective implementation, it is necessary to take certain concrete steps,” said the letter directed to CM Fadnavis.

“One such step is directing all educational institutions in Maharashtra—including all aided, unaided schools and colleges across all boards—to display their name boards prominently in Marathi. We request you to instruct the concerned department to issue appropriate orders in this regard. We hope you will consider this request positively,” said the letter.

After widespread condemnation from bank officials on the use of Marathi, Raj Thackeray had paused the agitation stating that it had successfully raised awareness and that the government should take necessary action.

During his speech at the Gudi Padwa rally on March 30, Thackeray had emphasised on the party’s firm stance on Marathi being compulsory in official matters and issued a warning, saying that those deliberately avoiding the use of Marathi would face consequences.
