Maharashtra is set to roll out district-level Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) cells to simplify the process of securing financial aid for critical medical treatments.
A new online platform will also be introduced, making the entire process paperless and accessible digitally, ensuring convenience for patients. “We are making the entire process paperless to simplify access for economically vulnerable patients,” said Rameshwar Naik, Head of the CMRF.
“A new online platform is being developed, allowing people to apply and track their cases digitally, saving time and effort. This decentralised system ensures that help is closer to those who need it.”
The initiative, detailed in a government resolution issued on January 22, involves establishing CMRF cells at district collectorate offices across Maharashtra.
These local centers will assist patients and their families by allowing them to submit applications, track their status, and seek support without traveling long distances to Mumbai.
The integration of the CMRF system with the existing Charity Hospital Assistance Portal will further streamline the process by merging application tracking numbers, ensuring transparency and speeding up fund disbursement.
Dr. Neha Kulkarni, a public health expert, lauded the initiative, stating, “Transitioning to a paperless, district-level system is a major step toward addressing the challenges faced by patients from rural areas. This will help minimize delays in accessing critical financial support, especially for life-threatening conditions requiring immediate treatment.”
The CMRF cells will not only handle applications but also play an active role in public outreach. They will raise awareness about the fund, guide applicants through the process, and provide real-time updates. Staff at these centers will also visit hospitals to monitor the impact of the assistance provided and ensure proper utilisation of funds.
As part of the reforms, expert committees will be set up to review the scope of the CMRF . These panels will evaluate the diseases covered under the fund and revise aid amounts to account for rising treatment costs. Efforts will also be made to expand the list of eligible conditions, potentially benefiting a larger number of patients.
“Patients and their families often face significant logistical and financial hurdles when accessing treatment. By bringing this support closer to home, we hope to alleviate some of that burden,” Naik added.
