Maharashtra govt starts work on green power corridors

The Maharashtra cabinet sanctioned a plan to construct 27 transmission links for 2,570 MW of green energy, which will involve an investment of Rs 367 crore.

Faced with a green energy target of 21,100 megawatts (MW) by 2020, Maharashtra has kick-started work to set up transmission corridors to supply green power.

The Maharashtra cabinet Wednesday sanctioned a plan to construct 27 transmission links for 2,570 MW of green energy, which will involve an investment of Rs 367 crore.

The initiative is a part of the Modi government’s Rs 9,000 crore plan for setting up transmission corridors across the country.

Replicating the Centre’s model, the thrust is on solar power, which is expected to contribute an additional 7,500 MW.

The target is also to add 5,000 MW from wind energy. An additional 1,000 MW is expected from bagasse-based co-generation, while the rest is likely to come from small hydro projects, industrial waste and agriculture residue.

Maharashtra Power Minister, Chandrasekhar Bawankule had said that strengthening the inter-state and intra-state transmission systems was key to meeting the 2020 target.

He further said that the stability of the power grid is important in the transmission of green energy.

He said that the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd will bear 20 per cent of the investment for setting up the link, whereas 40 per cent will come from the National Clean Energy Fund, and 40 per cent from the German Development Bank, which will attract an interest of 2 per cent per annum.”

Bawankule further said that the government plans to infuse equity in idle captive power plants to augment the overall power capacity.

The state cabinet has also decided to allot a 100 acre land in Nashik’s Shilapur for setting up a regional testing laboratory of the Central Power Research Institute.
