For the first time, students applying for first-year junior college (FYJC) admissions in Maharashtra will have access to detailed information on various career options on the same portal where they register for admission. A new feature titled ‘Career Path’ has been introduced on the FYJC admission website to help students make informed decisions when selecting a stream for their Class 11 admission.

This tab will offer insights into over 150 career options—from smartphone repair and floristry to engineering and fine arts. For each career, students can learn about the nature of the work involved and the academic qualifications required.

A senior official at the Directorate of Education (Secondary), which conducts FYJC admissions, said, “Although FYJC is not classified as higher education, it marks the beginning of a student’s journey toward it. Understanding career options and the academic routes needed to pursue them can guide students in choosing the right stream from the start.”

The officer pointed out that many students only consider career options after completing Class 12, often realising too late that they lack the foundational education needed for specific fields.

“For example, careers in science or vocational training at Industrial Training Institutes may require students to have chosen specific streams or courses right after Class 10. Early awareness can prevent the loss of two crucial years and better align students’ education with their career goals,” he said.

This year also marks the expansion of Maharashtra’s centralised FYJC admission system to cover the entire state. Officials noted that the Career Path tab is particularly beneficial for students in rural areas, where access to career guidance is often limited.

The feature was launched alongside the resumption of FYJC admissions on Monday following the resolution of initial technical glitches. Once a candidate clicks on the tab, it will open a page with a long list of various career paths, which are detailed alphabetically. In front of every career path, there will be information on what it entails. Further, it will mention what academic qualification is required, with details on various higher education courses that a candidate will have to study to make a career in that field.
