The toll in the Jilani Building collapse in Bhiwandi rose to 25, including 13 children, on Tuesday. Nearly 40 hours after a portion of the three-storey building collapsed early Monday morning, 25 people have so far been rescued but several remain trapped. Officials said they feared 12 people were still trapped inside.
On Tuesday, rescuers razed the boundary wall that the collapsed structure shared with a neighbouring building, allowing excavators, JCBs and dumpers to reach the site. “JCBs and excavators could not reach the site earlier as the lanes leading to it are very narrow and congested,” said Ashish Kumar, deputy commandant, NDRF.
Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pankaj Aashiya said, “After heavy machinery reached the spot, rescue operations picked up pace as debris was being cleared manually earlier.”
Officials said survivors were currently sheltered in a mosque and a community hall near the spot.
