Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan said Friday that senior leaders have been directed to forge an alliance “at any cost” ahead of the major municipal corporation elections expected to be held early next year.
In an early morning press conference, Chavan said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde have discussed the issue.
Chavan said elections to 29 municipal corporations are likely to be held in January, while the Zilla Parishad polls may get delayed as the matter is currently before the High Court.
On Thursday night, Chavan met with Shinde amid rising tensions between the two parties over the Bharatiya Janata Party allegedly poaching Shiv Sena leaders. He said Fadnavis had asked him to hold another round of discussions.
“We have created committees in municipal corporations. But in Mumbai or Thane, seniors have already decided to have an alliance ahead of the polls,” said Chavan.
The alliance formula will be decided soon, he added.
“There should not be any animosity in politics. You never know who could become your friends. We are trying to form alliances in as many places as possible for the civic polls.” Chavan stated.
