ONE PERSON was killed and eight others injured after a clash broke out between groups from two communities over a social media post in Maharashtra’s Akola district Saturday night, said police. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were clamped across the district Sunday morning.
According to the police, the clash took place around 10.30 pm. The police have registered two separate cases of rioting against 100-odd people at Old City police station in Akola and arrested 28 people from both communities.
The police said another case under Section 295 (A) (Outraging religious sentiments) and Section 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) was registered at Ramdaspeth police station against a youth for sharing an objectionable post on Instagram.
Police Inspector Kishor Shelake said, “The one who shared the post on Instagram has not been arrested or detained yet. Attempts are being made to trace him. We are also trying to gather evidence against the culprit.”

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Ghuge (Akola) said, “A person from one community uploaded a post on Instagram. It hurt the sentiment of the people from another community, after which people from both the communities confronted each other.”
“After a verbal argument, the groups turned violent and started pelting each other with stones. One of the rioters who sustained a head injury in the stone pelting died in the civil hospital early on Sunday,” said Ghuge.
Without disclosing the identity of the dead man, an official said he was in his early forties, a labourer by profession and survived by his wife and a 10-year-old daughter.
“A section of murder was subsequently added in the FIR after a labourer lost his life in the clash,” said Ghuge.
Around 7-8 vehicles were also damaged in the incident, said an official. A police van and a vehicle belonging to the fire brigade officials were also damaged. The police had to use tear gas to disperse the rioters. Two police officials also sustained injuries in the clash.
Heavy police deployment including personnel from State Reserve Police Force and Riot Control Police Force were deployed across the city to ensure that the law and order situation remained under control.
