Maharashtra: 4500 metric tonnes foodgrains distributed in 14 districts

The scheme launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis aims to ensure poor villagers reeling under drought conditions for the third consecutive year do not go without food.

The Maharashrta government has distributed 4,500 metric tonnes of foodgrains in 140 talukas of 14 districts. Beneficiaries in these drought-hit districts have been provided with wheat at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg.

The scheme under the Food Security Act was rolled out in eight districts of Marathwada and six districts of Vidarbha.

The state government has been provided with 11,000 metric tonnes of foodgrains — 6,600 tonnes of wheat and 4,400 tonnes of rice — at subsidised rates from the Centre for distribution among the needy.

Food security is among the several schemes the state government launched on Independence Day and drought-prone districts in Marathwada and Vidarbha have been shortlisted for priority.

Among other schemes are wells and farm ponds to help farmers.
