After over four months of delay, the Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Research, Training and Human Development Institute (SARTHI) has finally declared the list of meritorious boys and girls from Maratha, Kunbi community of Maharashtra selected for the Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad SARTHI overseas higher education scholarship.

After the process of applications was over in July, the list of eligible candidates for the overseas education scholarship was expected to be out in September. Earlier this month, The Indian Express reported the delay in declaration of the list of candidates eligible for the scholarship. The delay has led many to change their plans or postpone their higher-education studies.

Even as the list is out, criticisms have been raised against keeping around 30 seats vacant out of a total 75 seats under the scheme. Only 44 students have been selected from 200 applications, which shows that the scheme is not utilised to its maximum capacity, said student activist Kuldeep Ambekar associated with Student Helping Hand, who had written to the government to expedite the process.

An official from SARTHI, however, clarified that this is only the first phase of selection. “In a year, there are two different admission seasons for universities abroad. And this quota of 75 seats is for the entire year. We are hopeful that in the next phase of selection, more names will be out,” the officer added.

‘Unutilised seats hint at unawareness’

But Ambekar pointed out that last year too only 50 students were selected in total. “Candidates coming from underprivileged backgrounds and their parents are very hopeful of the scheme to be able to complete their dream to study abroad. Unutilised seats hint at unawareness about the scheme among eligible candidates,” he said.

The Sayajirao Gaekwad SARTHI Scholarship is given to meritorious students from Maratha and Kunbi communities of Maharashtra through SARTHI, a non-profit government organisation, to pursue higher education, including Masters and PhD programmes, from reputed foreign universities. It got the approval of state government in July 2023.
