The police have sent the cough syrup bottle for forensic examination.
A 59-year-old laundryman from the Lower Parel area in Mumbai died on Thursday after he allegedly accidentally consumed a chemical meant for removing stains from clothes, mistaking it for cough syrup. The man, who was suffering from a cough, had stored the chemical in the cough syrup bottle, the police said.
The deceased has been identified as Sambhajit Sajai Dhobi, 59, who ran a laundry store near Deepak Talkies.
According to the police, Dhobi experienced acute pain in his stomach and later vomited blood on Thursday. He was rushed to the civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel and died during the night during treatment. The NM Joshi Marg police were informed about the incident.
The police recorded statements from his relatives, friends, and workers. After a preliminary inquiry, the police said Dhobi had a habit of storing stain-removing chemicals and cloth dyes in any empty bottles.
On Wednesday, Dhobi consumed ‘cough syrup’ from a bottle not realising that he had stored the chemical in it.
“The man developed health complications and allegedly died due to a poisonous reaction to the chemical,” said a police officer.
