A laptop bag was spotted outside terminal 1A of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) at midnight on Saturday. The bag was spotted outside the terminal area at about 12:45 am and nobody claimed it. This led to a high alert in the terminal area, said a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel on condition of anonymity.
According to airport officials, the bag was found near the Kingfisher Airline reservation counter. The Bomb Detection & Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called in at about 12:45 am and the overall exercise took about 45 minutes, said a spokesperson from the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL). According to the spokesperson, there was nothing suspicious found in the bag, however nobody has claimed it yet.
Following 26/11 and other blasts across India last year, security at the airport has been on high alert. Because there is mobilisation of the BDDS and our guards the situation immediately becomes visible causing passengers to panic, said a CISF officer.
The last serious bomb scare at the airport was on November 1 last year when some persons claimed to have heard a ticking sound coming from an unidentified car parked outside terminal 1B. However, nothing suspicious was found in the car.
