Labourer falls to death from Nagpada building,contractor held for negligence

Nagpada Police on Thursday arrested the contractor of an under-construction building in Mumbai Central area for the death of a labourer.

Nagpada Police on Thursday arrested the contractor of an under-construction building in Mumbai Central area for the death of a labourer. The contractor was arrested after a 26-year-old labourer fell to his death from the 19th floor of the building on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Babu Shaikh. Police revealed that Shaikh,who was working at the under-construction Elegant Tower on Dr Nair Road in Mumbai Central,fell down from the open shaft in place for the elevator.

“The incident took place at 6:45 pm on Wednesday. Shaikh was working on the 19th floor of the high-rise when he walked towards the elevator shaft which was not cordoned off. He did not realise that he was on the edge and fell to his death,” said senior police inspector Vinayak Sawade.

When workers at the construction site heard a loud thud,they rushed to see Shaikh lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to the J J Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

“We have taken the statements of people who were at the spot. On the basis of a complaint from Shaikh’s friend and colleague Raju Shaikh,we arrested contractor Mohan Nair (51) under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code for causing death by negligence,” said Sawade. The police have also booked the builder of the building. “We are trying to trace him. Investigation is on,” he added.
