The complainant approached police and filed a complaint at Khar police station. (Representational photo/ File)The Mumbai police arrested five people for impersonating cops and robbing a man of Rs 5 lakhs cash, said police.
According to police, the incident took place when the victim went to deposit money at an ATM of Canara Bank in Khar around 7am on September 8. The money had been given by his cousin, who is into foreign exchange, said police.
The accused, posing as policemen, told the victim they needed to take him for questioning to the police station about the source of the cash. Midway, they told him to get off the car at SV Road in Santacruz as they had to conduct a few more raids’ and fled with the money.
The complainant approached police and filed a complaint at Khar police station. The Khar police, under senior inspector Sanjeev Dhumal, went through CCTV footage and through technical analysis, identified and arrested the accused.
The accused have been identified as Sandesh Dattaram Maladkar, Prafulla Shankar More, Vikas Sridhar Surve, Salary Kempe Gowda, and Darshan Mahesh Yagnik.
According to police, the accused have a history of similar crimes, with multiple cases registered against them in various police stations. They have been sent to police custody till September 18.
An officer said someone known to the complainant had tipped off the accused. The police are currently on his look out. The police are investigating further to find out if the accused may have committed similar crimes in other areas.
