The condition of national award winning animator Charu Khandal,20,who suffered grievious injuries in an accident, continued to be critical on Tuesday. Khandal is on ventillator support at the intensive care unit of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

“She has suffered fractures in the neck and has injured her spinal cord. As of now,we have been providing conservative treatment, but she will be undergoing a major surgery soon,” a hospital official said.

Khandal’s friend Vikrant Goyal,26,who was also injured in the accident, was taken off ventillator on Thursday but continues to be critical. “Vikrant underwent a surgery on his chest. He had weakness in his limbs before the surgery but that has reduced. However,he will need rigorous physiotherapy,” the official said.

Khandal, her sister Mona and Goyal were on their way to Juhu from Malad on Sunday when a speeding Honda City rammed the autorickshaw in which they were travelling from behind. The police had slapped rash and drunken driving charges against the car driver — Manoj Gautam,39 — and later released him on a bond of Rs 5,000. Friends and relatives of Khandal have launched an online campaign demanding the maximum punishment for accused in such cases.
