File photoA Kenyan woman was apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport for attempting to smuggle nearly Rs 10 crore worth of cocaine into India. The woman concealed the drug in false compartments in her sandals and handbag.
Acting on precise intelligence, DRI officials intercepted Eva Mburu, 41, upon her arrival from Nairobi, Kenya, during the early hours of Wednesday.
Upon inspecting her luggage, DRI sleuths noticed a handbag and a pair of sandals that seemed unusually heavy. An examination revealed packets of the drug were hidden in compartments in the handbag and sandals.
Approximately 970 grams of cocaine, valued at around Rs 10 crore, were discovered and subsequently confiscated, according to a source.
During an interrogation, Mburu confessed to being aware of India’s prohibition on drug trafficking, but admitted to participating in the illicit trade in exchange for a substantial sum of money. She also disclosed the identity of an individual who provided her with the luggage and the drugs, another source disclosed.

In India, the commercial quantity threshold for cocaine is set at 100 grams by the government. Individuals caught trafficking commercial quantities of drugs may face imprisonment of up to 20 years.
