Kasab innocent Pak villager, implicated in case: lawyer

Sticking to Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab’s statement, his lawyer KP Pawar on Thursday told the special court that Kasab had been made a scapegoat by the Mumbai police just because he was a Pakistani national.

Sticking to Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab’s statement, his lawyer KP Pawar on Thursday told the special court that Kasab had been made a scapegoat by the Mumbai police just because he was a Pakistani national. “His only mistake is that he had come to Mumbai because of his craze for Hindi cinema. The police found him an easy target and implicated him in such a big case,” Pawar said in his final argument.

Toeing Kasab’s lines further,Pawar told the court that he had come to India a fortnight prior to November 26,2008,and was arrested by the police from the suburban Juhu Chowpatty where he had gone for a stroll. “Kasab is an innocent boy from a small village in Pakistan. He is an easy prey and target for the police,” the lawyer told Judge ML Tahiliyani. “If the prosecution wanted to carry out a genuine trial they would have brought specific evidence against my client (Kasab). All evidence that the police are relying on are either CCTV footage or media depositions.”

Like Kasab, the defence lawyer also claimed that all the terrorists who had attacked Mumbai were dead and Kasab was just a face-saving exercise for the police. “The police could not arrest the 35 absconding accused and hence are targeting an innocent person.”

According to Pawar, the evidence adduced by the prosecution is “manipulated, fabricated and improbable”.

On Kasab’s confession before a magistrate and his guilt plea before the special court,Pawar said it was given under police “duress”. He said the police got his confession by promising him lesser punishment. “The police have made Kasab a cheerleader dancing at Brabourne Stadium.”

Pawar will continue his arguments on Friday, after which the lawyers of the two other accused — Faheem Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed— will make their final arguments.
