Following a massive overhaul,Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali will now offer state-of-the-art public health facilities Monday onwards.
The number of beds at the hospital,now called Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Municipal General Hospital,has been increased from 120 to 324. Renovating the hospital cost Rs 114.86 crore. Of the 324 beds,30 will be for those who can afford private hospital charges,making it the first civic hospital to have paid-bed facilities. Each room will have a bed for the patient,another for a relative and an attached bathroom, Manisha Mhaiskar,additional municipal commissioner, said.
The cost of rooms has not been worked out yet,but a proposal will be sent to BMCs standing committee in two weeks,she said.
For the first time,we have tried to fill the gap for middle-class citizens,who cannot afford a five-star hospital,but still want health-care centres with better facilities, said Mhaiskar.
The hospital will maintain a 10-bed facility for multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB patients and 30 beds for dialysis. The dialysis centre will be opened September end.
The hospital will also have a separate 30-bed space with improved facilities for senior citizens. It will also be the first hospital in the western suburbs to provide chemotherapy, she added.
Of the 455 sanctioned posts,337 have been filled. The remaining will be filled by next month.
BMC health committee chairman,Geeta Gawli,said it would take time before the hospital becomes completely operational. I have proposed a fine on contractors for the delay. The decision is still pending, Gawli said.
