Juhu beach: Two feared ‘drowned’

This is the fourth drowning incident at the Juhu beach in the past two months.

Two teenagers are suspected to have drowned and three others were rescued at Juhu beach on Friday afternoon after they went for a swim there to beat the heat.

The bodies of the two, identified as Sameer Shaikh,17, and Rajesh Chaudhary, 20, were not found till the time of going to press.

The incident took place around 1 pm, after the five friends, including the ones rescued, Naveen Kanat, 22, Abhijeet Mandal, 21, and Roshan Ghanta, 17, went for a swim at the isolated Koliwada stretch of Juhu beach.

After the five entered the water, Shaikh and Chaudhary went deeper into the sea as they wanted to take a bath and were carrying soap, said a lifeguard at the Juhu beach. Ghanta was following them.

However, soon a strong water current swept the two friends in. Ghanta was pulled back by Mandal and the friends started shouting for help.

The lifeguards reached the spot but Shaikh and Chaudhary could not be located.

The fire brigade was also called for help but till the time of going to press, the duo could not be located and search operations were called off for the day.

Chaudhary is survived by his parents and two brothers. Shaikh is survived by his mother and three siblings, including two sisters.

On May 23, another boy had drowned at Juhu beach. This is the fourth drowning incident at the Juhu beach in the past two months.

There are five lifeguards on the beach and three of them guard the main beach that is crowded.

They have constantly emphasised the need for having more lifeguards at the beach.
