Juhu police have turned to the case of model Viveka Babajee, who had killed herself in 2010,to get insight into the suicide of actor Jiah Khan, said officials. Jiah,25,hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her Juhu apartment late on Monday night.

Police are studying loopholes in Babajee case investigation which were rectified later, said officials. Babajee was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her Bandra apartment and police had first registered an Accidental Death report. Later, they found a diary entry by Babajee, which read ‘you killed me,Gautam Vora’. This led police to book her boyfriend for abetment of suicide.

“We have also asked cyber crime experts to study Jiah’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to get insight into her thoughts and feelings,” said an officer.

The British-Indian actor’s last phone call at 10.53 pm on Monday minutes before she killed herself was to her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi, son of actor Aditya Pancholi. Police continued to question Sooraj after Jiah’s mother Rabiya Amin told them that the couple had a few misunderstandings. CCTV grabs from Sagar Sangeet Apartment, where Jiah lived, showed the watchman dumping a bouquet sent by Sooraj on the orders of Jiah.

Police have recorded statements of Jiah’s mother,Sooraj,Aditya, their domestic help Deva and friends Karan,Kartik and Neelu. Yesteryear actress Anju Mahendru,at whose house Aditya and Rabiya were dining the night Jiah killed herself, was also questioned. “Till now there is no direct evidence against Sooraj,” said an officer.

“Statements of her friends with whom she had left for Hyderabad for audition Saturday morning have also been recorded,” said inspector Sangeeta Khadekar.

Police will also contact the producer in Hyderabad who conducted Jiah’s audition.

“Jiah had suicidal tendency and history of depression. We are questioning everyone associated with Jiah,” said Vishwas Nangre-Patil,Additional Commissioner of Police (West region).

Khadekar said they are awaiting the viscera analysis to find out if there was a history of alcohol. “The postmortem report says she was not drunk or had taken any tablets.”

Seven months ago,Jiah had attempted to slit her wrist, said police. “Jiah had then called Sooraj, who was at Worli, and asked for help. As Sooraj could not have reached Jiah on time,he sent Deva and Karan’s sister who took her to a doctor,” said an officer.

“Jiah was also taking anti-depressants though she was not given any medical prescription,” said Khadekar.

‘A different person’

Jiah was in touch with a few officers at Juhu police station that she was introduced to by Ram Gopal Verma. Many of them remember her as a different person, always wanting to interact and make new friends. “She would call from London and ask how we were. She updated us about every new thing, like when she bought her first car. She had no qualms,” said an officer.

Another official said she had rescued a woman from flesh trade and hired her as domestic help. “But the woman robbed Jiah and fled. She,however, never lodged a complaint,” said an officer.
