A 75-year-old man – father of a Maharashtra cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer – was bludgeoned to death in the courtyard of their family home in Chakur town of Latur, the police said.
The incident took place between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The Latur police said Pralhad Shantiveer Akkanouru – father of IPS officer Prasad Akkanouru (33), who is currently posted as Superintendent of Police with the Criminal Investigation Department in Pune – was found dead in the bed. The police said he had a serious injury on the head, above the ear.
Lata Phad, Additional Superintendent of Police (Latur), said, “Akkanouru was fast sleep under the open sky in their courtyard. The family members had spoken to him before he went to sleep on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, when his grandson woke up and went to him, he found Akkanouru lying unresponsive.”
He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
“Till now, we have not been able to zero down any particular motive or any suspect. But there are some possible theories that we are working on. We have formed four separate teams to work on these possibilities,” Phad added.
In a Facebook post after his father’s murder came to light, Prasad has written,
“He lived like a fakir, open under the sky with no fear of anything. The account of his life was clean with no dues to anyone. He himself lived with bare minimum resources leaving everything else to others.”
