Frustrated with the delay, over 800 intern doctors from these medical colleges will work wearing black ribbons from June.

Even as the amount of stipend paid to intern doctors in all government medical colleges (GMC) has been raised to Rs.18000 a month from February 2024, intern doctors from five BMC-run medical colleges in Mumbai continue to get Rs.11000 a month as stipend. Frustrated with the delay, over 800 intern doctors from these medical colleges will work wearing black ribbons from June.

The Maharashtra state government in February declared an increase in the amount of stipend paid to interning doctors in GMCs, following consistent demand by them while complaining that stipend paid to intern doctors in GMCs is the lowest in state, across country. A Government resolution was issued in this regard in February and accordingly revised stipend amount was started in all GMCs across Maharashtra, except BMC-run GMCs in Mumbai.

Dr. Abhinav, Joint Secretary of the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) Maharashtra which has been at the forefront of interns’ demand to increase the amount of stipend, said, “The GR was issued by state on February 27, but BMC has still not implemented it. They are citing the Model Code of Conduct due to general elections which does not allow them to pass resolutions to this effect. But the MCC was implemented from March 15. They had enough time to complete the formalities before that, just like it was done for all other GMCs in the state.”

The association claims that their efforts of following up with authorities have gone in vain, forcing them to protest for their rights. “From June 4, all the 803 intern doctors from five Medical Colleges under BMC will work with Black ribbons on. And after a week we will protest for our rights,” said Dr Abhinav, while adding that apart from prompt implementation of the GR by BMC, the association demands that all interns are paid the arrears of four months.
