Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staffers on Friday removed several hoardings in Dharavi put up by the Dharavi Bachao Andolan (DBA) and Shetkari Kamgar Paksh to publicise a December 7 public meeting opposing the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
According to the organisers, civic officials told them verbally that the banners, which carried a political cartoon of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Dy CM Eknath Shinde, were being pulled down as they “would insult the CM’s post”.
Advocate Rajendra Korde, convenor of the Dharavi Bachao Andolan, said, “We have organised a public rally on December 7 and have put up hoardings with a cartoon of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde. We have a long-standing history of cartoons in India; however suddenly the police and BMC officials came and started removing the banners, saying it would insult the CM’s post and hence they are removing it. There are at least 25 small hoardings which have been removed.”
Videos from the spot show civic staffers pulling down the hoardings near shops and residential lanes. The banners carried slogans such as “Adani Hatao, Dharavi Bachao” and advertised a public meeting to be held on Decembet 7 at 6pm near Kamaraj High School on 90 Feet Road.
The organisers said the protest meeting was being held in response to ther recent Annexure-2 eligibility lists issued across four pockets of Dharavi including, Meghwadi–Ganesh Nagar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Tilak Nagar and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.
According to the organisers, 80–85% of residents in these localities have been marked as ineligible, with only 15–20% listed as eligible.
In Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, the note states, only two of 121 surveyed residents have been found to be eligible, while the rest have been marked ineligible or pending verification and survey.
Residents of Ganesh Nagar–Meghwadi have also received seven-day eviction notices from the DRP authorities, asking them to vacate their houses. The notices warn that the structures may be cleared using force and the land handed over to the developer if residents do not comply.
The organisers say that these developments “have exposed the attempt to remove Dharavi residents and hand over the land for Adani’s extended BKC-2 plan”.
Former MLA Baburao Mane and advocate Korde said the December 7 meeting will be held as planned despite the banners’ removal. “No matter the pressure, the public meeting will take place,” the organisers said.HL: ‘Insult to CM post’: BMC removes hoardings with Fadnavis, Shinde’s caricatures
