India’s first Confucius Institute was inaugurated Thursday evening by Mumbai University and Tianjin University of Technology (TUT),People’s Republic of China

India’s first Confucius Institute was inaugurated Thursday evening by Mumbai University and Tianjin University of Technology (TUT),People’s Republic of China (PRC),at the Kalina campus.

The institute will not only promote Chinese language,art and culture in Indian but also start a student and faculty exchange programme between the two nations.

A symbolic plaque was unveiled by Rajesh Tope,minister for higher and technical education. Padmakar Valvi,minister for sports and youth welfare,Meng Qingsong,chairman of the TUT board,and Liu Youfa,consul general of PRC in Mumbai,were also present.

To begin with,there will be a Chinese language course.

“Once the institute is set up,there will be two officials heading it — one from Mumbai University and the other from TUT or Hanban. The Chinese representative will stay here and we will look after his accommodation. Once our teachers learn Chinese they will go to that country and teach Hindi and English languages to Chinese students and teacher,” said an MU spokesperson.
