Zarna grew up in Mumbai as a teenager before emigrating to the United States
Zarna Garg, popular Indian-American stand-up comedian known for her humour that blends Indian cultural references with Western parenting quirks, is currently in Mumbai.
The comedian , who went viral for her infamous mother-in-law jokes, arrived with her children — Zoya, Brij, and Vir — on Wednesday and was seen seeking blessings at Siddhivinayak Temple on Thursday morning.
“As a true-blue Mumbaikar, she wanted to thank Bappa for her successes, and, of course, introduce her kids to one of the most beloved landmarks of Mumbai, where her heart truly belongs,” her team told The Indian Express.
Zarna grew up in Mumbai as a teenager before emigrating to the United States. A stay-at-home mother for 16 years, she was nudged into comedy by her children.
Now known for calling herself “the mom who does comedy at night”, Zarna resonates widely with Indian-American mothers and first-generation immigrants. She shot to fame on social media, where she has over 1.4 million followers on Instagram alone, thanks to her clean comedy and viral sketches featuring her family.
She is among the few Indian-origin female comedians to break into the mainstream US comedy circuit, having opened for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and performed at iconic venues like The Comedy Cellar and Caroline’s in New York City.
The Garg family will be in the city for about a week, during which Zarna will promote her memoir That Indian Woman, which made it to The New York Times best-seller list earlier this year. She will also spotlight her latest stand-up special Practical People Win, which trended at #2 on American streaming platform Hulu and has now been acquired by JioCinema.
On Friday evening, Zarna and her children will also record a live episode of their wildly popular Zarna Garg Family Podcast at Bandra’s Bal Gandharva Auditorium.
“Zarna has long believed that while others leave India to make a living, her heart never left. India, and Indian audiences, is where she truly belongs. This visit is nothing short of a homecoming,” her team added.
