Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that because of the BJP, the Prime Minister was insulted, the country had to face embarrassment, was brought to its knees and “forced to apologise” by the Arab countries following the controversial remarks made by its then spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad.

“What the (BJP) spokesperson said was not sensible. She insulted the Prophet… What was the need? Why?,” Thackeray said while addressing Shiv Sena’s Swabhiman rally in Aurangabad on Wednesday.

Alleging that BJP spokespersons have become uncontrollable and say anything they wish, Thackeray added: “Because of the BJP spokesperson, the country is being insulted. Middle East and Arab countries have come down heavily on the country, bringing the country on its knees… They forced country to apologize… BJP’s stand cannot be the country’s stand. The crime has been committed by the BJP and not the country. Why should we apologise? Why should the country suffer and be embarrassed because of a BJP spokesperson?”

During a TV debate last month, Nupur Sharma, then BJP spokesperson, had made controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad, triggering an outrage on social media.

After several Arab countries, including UAE, Qatar and Bahrain, expressed strong concerns over the comments, BJP had suspended Sharma from the primary membership of the party on Sunday. BJP’s Delhi spokesperson, Naveen Kumar Jindal, who had also made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammed on Twitter, was expelled from the party on June 5.
