THE BJP had to face the embarrassment of losing the sarpanch election in Fetri village near Nagpur, which has been adopted by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for development. The party also lost the post to rival Congress in the Suradevi village adopted by Nagpur’s Guardian Minister and State Power Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
At Fetri, Dhanashree Dhomne, supported by Congress-NCP combine won the post while at Suradevi, Congress-supported candidate Sunil Dudhpachare emerged victorious. CM Devendra Fadnavis’ wife Amruta has been visiting Fetri to oversee the development works.
In general, the BJP failed to impress in Nagpur district, which has all MPs and MLAs belonging to the BJP. Out of the total 237 gram panchayats, BJP district chief Rajiv Potdar claimed to have won 126 sarpanch posts. Congress district chief Rajendra Mulak, however, claimed that the Congress won 93 seats while the NCP won 37 seats, pushing the BJP behind the combine’s total tally. In conflicting claims in the election not fought on party symbols, the NCP claimed to have won 41 sarpanch posts.
Shiv Sena won 6 posts and Independent seven sarpanch posts. In Bhandara district, however, where party MP Nana Patole has been speaking out against the party leadership, the BJP claim to have made impressive gains – 211 out of total 347 sarpanch posts.
