As per the latest NCRB report, Mumbai has been listed second, after Delhi, for highest incidence of rape, with 391 reported cases in 2013. The state however, leads the country in rape cases, with 3063 incidents reported last year.
Mumbai accounts for 2946 incidents of crimes against women, out of 24895 in Maharashtra.
Maharashtra was also ranked the highest for number of incidences of incest rape, with 108 cases. Of the 117 victims, most common ages of the victims was less than 10 years with 34 cases. The second most common victims were between 14 and 18 years old with 31 cases. Of these incidences, 14 were reported in Mumbai.
Of the total number of rape cases in Maharashtra, 3057 of the offenders were known to the victim. In Mumbai, 43 of the offenders were neighbours, 14 were parents or close family members and 19 were relatives. For both incestuous and other forms of rape, figures showed that 133 victims in Mumbai were between the age of 14 and 18.
Both state and city also rank second in the country for incidents outraging a woman’s modesty. In Maharashtra, 8132 molestation cases were reported last year, and 1163 in Mumbai.
