Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai will introduce two new postgraduate programmes (PGPs) from the beginning of the academic year 2025-26: urban logistics and infrastructure management, and public policy and administration. Both these will be one-year executive courses.

The institute is currently in the process of finalising the course curriculum along with industry experts. While both these courses will have separate entrance procedures to select appropriate candidates, IIM Mumbai will soon declare details such as eligibility and fee structure.

IIM Mumbai director Manoj K Tiwari said that both courses result from increasing demand in these sectors. “Public policy has been a popular topic of higher education considering the focus on better governance. Government representatives and corporations are taking an interest in the subject to better coordinate with the government by understanding policy matters and their implications. Whereas, with growing infrastructural developments, there is a need to study urban logistics and infrastructure management.”

Emphasising the importance of the courses, Tiwari said, “With rapid infrastructure development taking place in cities across the country, urban areas are constantly growing. However, a lack of coordination often leads to inefficiencies, as different bodies may be working on projects simultaneously—such as one focusing on construction while another is handling water supply. This disorganisation can result in chaos and discomfort during development efforts.”

Tiwari said a dedicated academic discipline in this field could help analyse and implement strategies to foster better coordination in planning and execution, ultimately easing the burden on regulatory authorities and creating a more seamless development process. He also said the increasing number of warehouses to meet the changing market demands requires a dedicated focus on urban logistics.

IIM Mumbai plans to offer the one-year postgraduate course in urban logistics and infrastructure management, with the intention of transitioning it to a full-time two-year MBA programme.

“We are looking for a partner in this course, whether private or public administrator, who is actively involved in infrastructural development and maintenance. Having such a partner will enhance the curriculum formation by bringing a professional and practical approach,” said Tiwari.
